Attention any and all fellow tech history fans – The Raymond Scott Archives has published a free 349-page compendium of Raymond Scott artifacts and ephemera, including previously uncirculated historic material, as a downloadable PDF. This is a fascinating read. Here’s one example:

Unfortunately, this 44-year-old tape was not in very good shape – lots of dropouts. And hearing this makes me miss my Ampeg AEB 1 Scroll Bass – nothing else sounds like it.

Fun with synthesizers 30 years ago.

“After a morning on the golf course, Chuck Leavell and Don Muro stop by the Anaheim Convention Center to entertain businessmen in the music trade. Inspired by the enthusiastic response after their real-time fantasie impromptu based on Subotnick’s “The Wild Bull,” the gents proceed to serenade the crowd with a variety of licks and riffs showcasing the delicate sounds of the new Korg Poly-800 – the world’s first programmable/polyphonic/battery-operated MIDI synthesizer. Recorded in high-deaf VHS at the January 1984 NAMM show during those early, heady days of MIDI, when men wore strap-on keyboards with vigour.”

“Ussachevsky’s first experiments began in 1951 when the Columbia Music Department acquired an Ampex 400 tape recorder, which together with a microphone, a pair of earphones, and a borrowed Magnecord recorder, constituted the entire equipment of the first American electronic music studio.”

Very sad news.
A versatile musician and a great synthesizer player – you only needed about five notes to know it was Georege Duke on Minimoog or Odyssey.
One of my favorite tunes from the early 70s.

- It’s Time was mastered for vinyl and CD At Masterdisk in NYC by the talented Alex DeTurk, Masterdisk’s ace lacquer cutter. The tracks have never sounded better, and it’s always fun to hear one’s music on a six-figure sound system. We decided to reject the loudness war games and to preserve the dynamic range of the original tracks. Alex asked me to bring in a copy of the original LP. When I gave it to him, he felt it, he studied it under the light, he even sniffed it. This man is serious about vinyl.

- It’s official – It’s Time (1977) is going to be re-released on vinyl. The album will be re-mastered for vinyl, CD, and MP3 downloads. More details coming.
