THE CHURCH MUSICIAN'S GUIDE TO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

(GIA Publications, Inc.)

"...a functional guidebook to the many electronic devices and techniques that surround music making today."

The American Organist

"Don Muro has written a very helpful book on the basics of music technology that all church musicians should know... Muro has addressed many of the primary areas that are of interest to church musicians and explains them in a straightforward and easily understood manner."                                                                         Worship Arts

This book is written for both traditional and contemporary church musicians - organists, pianists, guitarists and other instrumentalists, choir directors, cantors, gospel choirs, folk groups and other contemporary ensembles.  The material covered in this book is based on the questions most often asked at my music technology workshops.

The purpose of this book is to acquaint you with the music technology tools currently available and to explain how they can be used.  Ultimately, the degree to which technology is embraced will be a personal decision.

It is my hope that these tools of technology will be used not to replace but to enhance a traditional church music program in a way that is both musical and liturgically appropriate.

How To Use This Book

This book was written to help you learn how to use music technology to enhance and to improve your music program.  The goals of this book are:

1.     To identify the areas of music technology most useful to church musicians.  Music technology can include everything from selecting portable CD players to designing world-class recording studios.  I have included the topics most often discussed at my workshops and seminars.

2.     To provide clear and concise explanations of each topic.  I have attempted to avoid technical details and to make the material in this book as understandable and as relevant as possible.

3.     To provide resources for further information.  Every chapter in this book could have been expanded into a book.  Readers who would like additional information on a specific topic can consult the list of resources at the end of each chapter.

If you are new to music technology, you should read the book sequentially.  If you are already familiar with a topic, skim through the chapter and read the tips.
